He is hearing and skilled in American Sign Language. He has edited and written six books on providing mental health care to Deaf people, and consults to Deaf mental health programs in the state and nationwide. Neil has worked across the spectrum of mental health services including mental health clinics and private practice, as well as partial hospital programs, psychiatric inpatient units and emergency services. He is on the faculty at the UMass Medical School and taught in the graduate rehabilitation program at Assumption College for over a decade. Neil most often uses a therapeutic approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT, which for him means focusing on helping people develop skillful means of responding to life challenges.
